APOLLO, one of the most powerful gods and a great warrior, mocked the god of love Eros(cupid) for his use of bow and arrow, saying, "What have you to do with warlike weapons? Leave them for hands worthy of them. Apollo scourns(küçümseme) Eros, arrows should be used by a grown up.
Eros gets angry and take an oath(yemin). Cupid prepares two arrows one of them is golden arrow and other arrow is silver. Eros choses Daphne to make fall in love with her and uses golden arrow to Apollo and then uses silver arrow and strike Daphne so she abhorred(nefret etmek) him,
Apollo meets daphne and confesses(itiraf etmek) his love, but she escapes and Apollo chases, when she tiried she prayed her father (a minor god of a river, name is Peneus) and Penaus transformed the nymph into a nice short plant with excellent smell. This plant was the laurel, which is called "daphne" is Greek, after the nymph's name. Apollo was heart-broken at the loss of Daphne and to remember her for ever, he made the laurel the symbol of tribute to poets. The laurel became therefore the symbol of the god. Note that Pythia, the priestess in the oracle of Delphi, was chewing leaves of laurel to communicate with Apollo and give her prophesies to people.
